Friday Auction Reminder…

Friday, August 21st, 2009

logoebay

It would seem like most eBay chip collectors must be on vacation this week since the majority of our 41 auctions ending Sunday have zero bids. But this is GREAT news for you, our valued blog reader. To remind you we start each and every auction usually way below book value and we never put a reserve on anything. This weekend just might be your lucky chance to put a new chip or two into your collection at way below their usual values.

Don’t take my word for it though… click on a chip below and go directly to that particular chip’s auction to see it’s current high bid. Chances are it’s still a great value. Or Click Here to see all 41 of this week’s auctions.

2010 Calendar

With August already 2/3rds over and with 2009 MORE than 2/3rds over it’s time to start thinking about the new year. We just added a great new 2010 calendar to our website featuring 12 great photographs of Las Vegas casinos, downtown and the strip. And at less than Five bucks each, this calendar is a must-have for every Las Vegas aficionado. Click Here to get yours!

Poker DVD

dvd1

We also added a DVD to our site that’s been a popular seller in our brick & mortar store for years. “How to Play Texas Hold ‘Em, From the Kitchen Table to the Final Table” is a great way to really learn all about the game from seasoned pros. There is beginning strategy, basic strategy and advanced strategy. You’ll learn how to calculate your odds and it will even teach you how to bluff plus a whole lot more. You can read all about it and get your own copy here.

Ticket Holdem

tickets

This is a really unique twist on the game of poker. Called Ticket Holdem, this is a game meant for larger groups of people. It’s simple to play even for a beginner. Each ticket when broken open reveals two standard playing cards. No two tickets are identical. These two cards then become the player’s hole cards. Spaced out during the event five community cards are revealed from a standard deck. This builds excitement and interest waiting for the next community card. After all five community cards are revealed each player combines their two hole cards with the five community cards to see who can make the best five card poker hand. That person is declared the winner. They can also be used as a fund raiser by selling each ticket and then rewarding a percentage of the sold tickets to the person who makes the best hand.

For example look below to the right. Within the player’s ticket are two hearts. The five community cards reveal three more hearts. Putting the two hole cards with the three hearts in the community draw will give this player a flush.

tickets2

Another way to play which doesn’t involve poker is match play. Cards from a standard deck are drawn one at a time. The first person to match both cards within their ticket in both rank and suit to the revealed cards from the deck is declared the winner. You can continue to draw cards to find the 2nd, 3rd or any number of winners.

We have the tickets available in 100 count and 300 count. Click Here to get your own tickets for your next party, tournament or event for some guaranteed fun.

eBay auctions ending Sunday!

Friday, August 14th, 2009

logoebay

We’ve got some really great chips up on eBay right now that are ending on Sunday evening. As of right now many don’t even have bids and the ones that do have relatively low bids compared to the chips’ collectible values.

Chips like these… the Carson Hot Springs was a casino in Carson City (Nevada’s capitol city) from 1959 till 1966. These chips are valued at $125-$149 in the latest version of The Chip Rack. As of this very moment that I am writing these words neither of these chips even has a bid. Click on one of the two chips below to see what the current bid is or make that first bid and break the ice.

The Cave was another short-lived Carson City casino that operated for two years back in the 60’s (1966-1968). This chip is valued at $100 to $124 in the 11th edition of The Chip Rack. Just click on the chip below to see what the current bid is at. Remember though you have less than 51 hours to place your best bid…

Besides these three Carson City chips we have 23 other lots ending on Sunday as well. Just about something for every casino collector so have a look and place your bid before the gavel falls on Sunday evening.

Poker Night at Spinettis

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

pokernight1

If you go back to one of our first few blog posts back in May we described our usual bi-monthly employee poker tournament. Somehow we skipped the month of July due to lots of vacations and just never having a night that worked for everyone. But last night the stars aligned and the nine of us (seven players and two “lurkers”) once again continued the famous, perhaps “infamous”, Spinettis tradition.

0809game1

6:01 PM sharp found the customers gone, the “open” sign turned off, the front door locked and everything just about ready. Pizza… check, beer… check, cookies… check… candy… check, beer… double and triple checked (whew!).

0809game2

The table was put into place, $10,000 worth of Desert Palace chips for each player counted out, the Copag cards shuffled and the Poker Genie set for nine thirteen minute sessions (a two hour game). It was then time to play some cards…

The competition was fierce and for the first hour there was no clear cut winner as everyone was winning pots. Dave was the first out going all in and losing what appeared to be a good hand on the river, next John and then Henry. Mikko just barely missed getting into the cash coming in fourth place. Once again, just like in May’s game, the final three in the money were Carlos, Ryan and Rosanne.

0809game3

Carlos went out next leaving just Ryan and Rosanne (see the photo to the left). After a good half hour of head-to-head play the two of them decided to cut a deal and split the 1st/2nd place money. BUT there was something even more important on the line… bragging rights for the next two months. A final hand was dealt with Rosanne winning both it and the crown till October when we break everything out once again.

0809game5

There’s Rosanne seen to the right counting her big winnings with a smile fit of a Spinettis Poker Tourney champion. OK, she’s my boss so I gotta’ write nice things about her but THIS blog author has watched her win two poker nights in a row and is already excited about the next game where the queen just might be un-throwned and a new king crowned…

Auctions ending THIS weekend!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

logoebay

If you follow this blog than you know that we have hundreds and hundreds of items in our eBay Store. But in addition we run a minimum of 25 live auctions each week that end on Sunday evenings starting at 5 PM Pacific time.

1299

This week is no different and on Sunday evening 39 auctions will end. There’s always some great deals to be had. If you’re a collector of gaming memorabilia we suggest you follow this link and notify eBay that you’d like us to be one of your “favorite sellers”. That way you’ll always know when we discount store items (like we do ALL the time) as well as our newly listed auction items.

1313

We’ve also set up a redirect URL to make it easy to follow our live auctions so you may want to bookmark that as well. Just enter www.tinyurl.com/spinettis into your browser and you’ll automatically be sent to our weekly auctions.

You can also take a look at our weekly Friday blog posts (just like this one!) and see four or five of the featured items that we’re auctioning that week. You can then click on ANY of the chips/dice in these posts and go directly to the actual eBay auction for that particular item. Cool, huh?

So what are you you waiting for? Go ahead, give it a try and click a chip below or above (or maybe even some Riviera dice) and place your best bid. You might just add a great new piece to your collection at a fantastically LOW price!

What’s New Wednesday, Aug 5th ‘09

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

wnw

We’ve added a few new products to our website this week including some new KEM playing cards as well as a few sets of NO CASH VALUE chips.

“No Cash Value” you’re asking?? Why in the world would anyone want a chip that had NO cash value? Well believe it or not there are quite a few no cash value (herein referred to as NCV) collectors out there. NCV chips are generally used in tournaments or casino promotions. Technically roulette chips are also NCV’s but most chip collectors put them into their own category.

This is a check, it has a $5 denomination printed on it.

This is a check, it has a $5 denomination printed on it.

This is a chip, there is no denomination printed on it.

This is a chip, there is no denomination printed on it.

So now I need to take an even bigger step backwards and explain the difference between a “chip” and a “check” (or “cheque”). A broad simple definition is that a check has a printed denomination on it and a chip does not. While most collectors refer to all checks AND chips as simply chips, there is a definite difference between the two.

There are several reasons that people like to collect these types of NCV chips. The first one being the “thrill of the hunt”. Since you cannot buy these chips directly from the casino cashier cage it is often much more difficult to acquire them. You need to either enter a casino sponsored tournament and pocket a few or you need to sign up for a promotion and then never play them on the gaming table as intended. A secondary reason that some collectors go after the NCV’s is their scarcity. They are almost always made in much smaller quantities than a regular house chip and therefore might have a higher value somewhere down the road due to their rarity.

In general we find that at this point in time most NCV’s have not escalated tremendously in value as quickly as a house check from the exact same casino BUT our hobby is still relatively young and there’s no telling what could happen with these chips 10, 20, 30 years (or more) down the road as our hobby grows and rarer chips become more collectible and more desirable.

We added two sets of NCV’s to our web site, both from Wendover which is located in the central, eastern part of the state bordering Utah. Many Salt Lake City residents looking for the closest Nevada casinos make the easy 90 mile trip across the Bonneville Salt Flats on I-80 each day to place their wagers or just to get away from their home state of Utah which shuns gaming in just about every form.

statelinencv

Just like downtown Las Vegas has it’s “Vegas Vic” cowboy character and Laughlin has it’s own “River Rick”, Wendover too has a similar icon named “Wendover Will”. He is actually prominently featured on the State Line NCV chips. These are a great looking set of three chips that can be had for one low price (only FIVE bucks!). They are full graphic PaulSon chips which means that the chip’s graphics extend past the usual center inlay area of it. You can get your own set by clicking on the image to the left or just CLICK HERE.

silversmithncv

The Silver Smith is located just down the road from the State Line but it’s name has changed since these chips were made and used. It’s now called the Montego Bay. These chips are very same full graphic PaulSon chips as the State Line and better yet can be had at the same low, low price despite the casino name change. Again just click the image to the right or CLICK HERE to get your own three-piece set.
