Auction Time… Going Once, Going Twice, SOLD!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

logoebay

This week we have some interesting chips ending Sunday night. Just like every other week, our eBay auctions begin to end at 5 PM Pacific time with each auction ending three minutes apart.

1group3

Just like the past two weeks we have our THIRD group of twenty-five $1 chips from all over Nevada ending. I just can’t stress enough what a great deal and value this is to the beginning collector. Not only are you saved the incredible amount of “leg work” from going around the state to 25 casinos but over time you are most certainly guaranteed that they will escalate in value.

We also have a few other great looking and very collectible chips ending on Sunday. Just click the actual chip below to go right to that particular auction.

We’ve got old obsolete chips from the Castaways, Circus-Circus, Continental and the Desert Inn amongst others all up for auction. Be sure to place your best bid and good luck!

Time to show ‘em off…

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

wnw

There’s several good ways to store your collectible chips but when you store them they are usually out of sight, albeit safe. In a future blog post we’ll go more into storage methods. But let’s say you want to DISPLAY your chips out where they can be easily seen and enjoyed. There’s basically three options: frames, binders and cases.

This week for our “What’s New Wednesday” blog entry we’re going to highlight chip inserts since we recently added them to our ever growing and continually evolving website. Inserts are what hold the chips or dice. After you put your collectibles into the insert then you would frame it and hang your new masterpiece on the wall or have it stand on a shelf.

chipframe1

If you came into our Las Vegas store you would see lots and lots of framed inserts all ready for purchase. But if you are interested in framing your chips and you can’t make it into our store, the insert is really all you need.

While we’d love to sell you a frame, it just wouldn’t be in your best interest to pay for the shipping of the frame and glass and get it from us when you could easily go to your local Michaels or Aaron Brothers Framing store and get one for yourself since the inserts are of a standard size.

chip63insert

But you will need the insert and let’s face it your local framing shop just ain’t gonna’ have something that perfectly holds casino chips or casino dice and that’s where we come in.

We have casino chip inserts in 5 sizes: 12-chip, 20-chip, 35-chip, 63-chip and 99-chip. We also have inserts available for both 24 pairs and 108 pairs of dice.

So a frame & insert is a great way to display up to 99 of your very best looking chips. Now here’s where a problem comes in… most collectors have WAY more than 99 chips. You can certainly store some and display the best in frames but if you want to show off more of your prized collection you should probably consider a chip binder.

chipbinder

We have a chip binder notebook that has “Casino Chips” emblazoned across the front of it and comes with five vinyl pages. This will hold from 60 to 150 chips as is or you can opt to purchase more pages since you binder will easily accommodate up to ten full pages. You can choose the type of page you want whether it be 12-pocket, 20-pocket or 30-pocket.

chipbinderopen

A 12-pocket page will hold twelve 2½” x 2½” cardboard flips. A 20-pocket page will accommodate twenty 2″ vinyl or cardboard flips and a 30-pocket page will hold thirty chips without flips snugly. Each type of page has it’s pros and cons.

The binder that we sell comes with 30-pocket pages as a default but we do sell the 12-pocket and 20-pocket ones as well. Just give us a call and we’ll work it out for you.

Lastly there are display cases that hold from one to nine chips. This is the type of display item that you would put on a shelf or on your desk to show that one or few special chip(s). You can see all of our display items by Clicking Here.

25 $1 Casino Chips for One Winning Bid!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

logoebay

Last week, this week and for the next two weeks we have had and will have an interesting eBay auction. We put together 100 $1 chips and grouped them into four piles of 25 each. Some of the chips are current, some are obsolete. Some from Northern Nevada, some from the Southern part of the state. There are some house chips and some limited editions. They are a great starter set for the new collector, a great gift for a would be collector or a fantastic way to fill in a few holes of your own collection and still have a few traders left over.

Last week’s group ended up selling for LESS than their face value of $25.00 and as I write these words this week’s group is still WAY less than face value as well.

Here’s the group that ends at 5 PM Pacific time this Sunday:

1group2

Just imagine how much time and gasoline it would take to drive all over the state picking these up for yourself? It would be SO much easier to just click the image above (or click here) place the winning bid and get them all mailed directly to your doorstep. And if you get lucky like last week’s winner you might just get them at less than the face value of the combined group! Don’t believe me? Here’s a link to last week’s finished auction of 25 different $1 chips that ended for under $22.00: Click Here!

Remember the current lot is the 2nd in a series of four that will run for the next few weeks, so there’s lots of opportunities to get one of these great 25-chip sets.

At any time it’s always easy to check our current eBay lots by entering this URL into your browser window: www.tinyurl.com/spinettis and you will be automatically redirected to our current auctions.

Poker, a Team Sport?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

OK, it’s Wednesday. I know you are probably expecting a “What’s New Wednesday” blog entry. But in an effort to NOT be so predictable that this becomes a boring, mundane blog I’ve decided to write about something a little different today.

So did the title of this blog post confuse you? I mean poker is definitely perceived to be and has always been an individual event.

dreamteamlogo

But there’s something new in the poker world called “Dream Team Poker”. Basically here’s how this two-day tournament is played. There are 122 3-person teams (366 players in all). The tournament has a unique scoring system. You compete as an individual but you are scored as a team. You receive a score based on the order of elimination, the higher your number the sooner you were out of the tourney. The two lowest numbers of the three teammates are added together and that becomes your team’s final score. Like golf, the lowest number wins. Money is awarded to both the best (lowest) team scores as well as the best (lowest) individual scores.

This has several advantages over your traditional poker tourney. First it allows players to play together with their friends, not against them. Secondly, each player has a higher chance of winning. One can end up in the money even if they are eliminated if by chance their two teammates both do well.

Sound interesting? If you have two poker buddies, can come up with a cool team name and want to enter the next tournament (or just want to learn more about it all works) head over to their website at DreamTeamPoker.com.

So you’re probably wondering how this all ties into Spinettis Gaming Supply aren’t you?

rosanne1

Well, our very own Rosanne Wright got to play in this years Dream Team Tournament a few weeks back at the Rio, during the World Series of Poker. Rosanne is our general manager here at Spinettis. She and two of her friends, Maureen and Phyllis teamed up and became “The Jersey Girls”. In the picture to the left, Rosanne is standing between her two friends.

So how did our “home team” do? While they weren’t in the money they had a respectable finish coming in 51st out of 122 teams with a score of 238 points. Maureen did very well, placing 100th out of the 366 players. More importantly, they all had a blast, had some good “gal-bonding” time and can’t wait till next year to try to better their score.

customizer1

The day of the event Rosanne was looking around the store wanting to bring her teammates a small gift as a good luck momento. She mentioned that it would be cool to do something personalized but it was so last minute that it just didn’t seem possible. Then she remembered the Poker Chip Customizer Kit that we sell here at the store.

The customizer kit comes with software, 700 labels and a centering tool to position your newly printed labels. At first Rosanne was concerned that it may be too difficult to install the software and design a chip but was soon pleasantly surprised.

Rosanne says “I couldn’t believe how simple it was to make my chip. I’m no graphic designer or computer expert but the software made it so easy to choose a template, pick some clip art and add the text. The labels printed perfectly the first time and it was easy to put them onto the chip. My teammates LOVED their new personalized card guards and other players even commented on them. If only they knew that I whipped them together that morning in just minutes I bet they’d be shocked!”.

Using the customizer kit, Rosanne chose our pink Ace/Jack chips, put them into a deluxe airtite chip holder and had an instant card guard. So I bet your wondering how her chip turned out? Well, here it is:

You can do something very similar as a gift or make chips for your own home game by picking yourself up a customizer kit. Just Click Here.

“Illegal” Auctions?

Friday, July 17th, 2009

logoebay

Did that blog title startle you?

Of course here at Spinettis we would NEVER do anything illegal but we do have some “illegal” chips up for auction this week. I guess I better clarify that as well… the chips themselves are not illegal but rather the casinos that they came from were.

Back in the 30’s through the 60’s there were many illegal casinos in just about every state of the union. At that time gaming was only legal in Nevada however places like Hot Springs Arkansas, Newport Kentucky, New Orleans Louisiana and Steubenville Ohio (among other towns) had many clubs, card rooms and casinos. In many cases organized crime ran these and bribed the town’s sheriff and law enforcement to turn a blind eye towards them.

Sometimes it was a single poker game in a back room, but in other cases there were multiple gaming tables, slot machines, horse books and even restaurants, showrooms & lounges.

vapors

For instance there was the Vapors in Hot Springs Arkansas. This property was built in 1959 by a local prominent businessman. Although it was a small nightclub, big name entertainers like Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore, Phyllis Diller, Liberace, Tiny Tim, the Smothers Brothers and more frequently performed there.

The Vapors may have been a talent entertainment facility, but income from the casino in the club and sales from alcohol helped pad the bill for big name talent. Although casino gambling in Hot Springs was illegal, the owner of the Vapors brought respectability by joining the chamber of commerce, contributing to all church fund drives and even gave the city two swimming pools – one for the whites and one for the blacks. He was quoted as saying, “Never underestimate the effectiveness of a straight cash bribe.”

Here are some chips from the Vapors. You can actually click on any of the chips below to go right to the eBay auction.

There were also hundreds of other illegal clubs such as the 633 Club, the Belvedere Club, the Bridge Street Club, the Idle Hour Club in Texas, O’dwyer’s, the Southern Club, the Tower Club, White Front and the Yorkshire Club. Right now on eBay we have chips up for each of these illegal joints. You can see them all by just CLICKING HERE. These 76 illegal chip auctions end on Sunday evening the 19th starting at 5 PM Pacific time though. So be sure to take a look and place your best bid before then.

What’s New Wednesday…

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

wnw

First, thanks to everyone that participated in “Hawaiian Shirt Day” yesterday. We actually had a few people come into the store sporting their colorful shirts and we happily gave them the discount we promised in Friday’s blog post. We even had a funny moment when one guy tried to take his shirt off and give it to his friend to put on so that he too could get the discount. Sorry, no shirt sharing allowed… especially when it involves a bare chested man standing in the front of our store!

paigowdice

We’ve added a few things to our site this week. We’ve put a few more collector chips up, added bingo boards, some Virginia City Bridge Sized Cards (available in four different colors) and a set of three precision Pai Gow Dice.

So that got me thinking… how many of our blog readers actually know about the game of Pai Gow? Now I’m not talking about the “watered-down” version of Pai Gow Poker played with cards. But rather, the hard core traditional game of Chinese dominoes that’s been played for centuries and can be found in many casinos.

Whether you are playing with cards or tiles (the “proper” Pai Gow terminology for dominoes) the object is more or less the same. You arrange your cards/tiles into two hands as does the banker (usually the casino dealer). You both have a high hand and a low hand. If BOTH your hands beat both the bankers, you win. If BOTH the banker’s hands beat your two, you lose. Anything else is a push, you neither win nor lose.

silverpg_cup

So where do the dice come into play you might be asking. After the tiles are mixed and stacked into piles of four the banker shakes the dice in a Pai Gow cup and slams them on the table. The results of the dice determine who gets the first stack of tiles.

The game is definitely worth learning and playing in a casino since the house edge is a small 1.5%, making it one of the best games to play. So how do you learn. The first thing would be to visit some of the popular online Pai Gow sites like PaiGow.com or PaiGow.org.

paigow1a

The other thing you should do is purchase a set of tiles to practice with at home before you venture into the casino and risk your hard earned money. You’ll want to learn the ranking hands and how to set your tiles at home where you aren’t under any pressure and there’s no financial risk. We offer several different sets of tiles as well as silver & gold cups, the dice pictured above and a Pai Gow layout. You can find them all on our Pai Gow page by CLICKING HERE.

As with many casino games that you may not have played, Pai Gow can look intimidating at first but armed with a knowledge you might just find yourself really enjoying playing the game on your next visit. To make it easier for you to learn we’re offering a 10% discount through next Tuesday, July 22nd on any and all of our Pai Gow products when you give us a call at (702) 362-8767.

Copag Playing Cards, a GREAT Value!

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

wnw

copag_logo

For quite some time we’ve been an authorized distributor & wholesaler of Copag Playing Cards. But this week we’ve added several new Copag products to our ever growing website.

The first thing to understand is that the vast majority of the Copag cards we carry come with two decks, called a “set-up”. They will have two different colored or different designed backs within each set-up. This is so one deck can be used on your current game hand while the second deck is being prepared for use on the next hand. This moves the game along at a quicker pace.

The Copag cards we carry are 100% plastic. We’re often asked what the differences between 100% plastic, plastic coated and paper coated cards are and why 100% plastic cards so much more expensive than the paper ones.

100% plastic playing cards are exactly as their name implies in that they are made from 100% plastic. These cards have the characteristics of plastic in that they are extremely durable, flexible and water resistant. 100% plastic playing cards will last significantly longer than plastic coated or paper only playing cards. They are more secure because they are very difficult to mark during play.

copagblackgold

Although 100% plastic cards are more expensive than paper based playing cards, their cost per hour of play is significantly lower than a typical paper deck of playing cards which is why you will find plastic cards in casino cardrooms all over the world.

So from a value standpoint you are better off purchasing the more expensive plastic cards less often. So now that you are sold on the plastic cards you still have a few more decisions to make. The first of these is the size, should you go with poker size or bridge size?

A poker size playing card, also known as wide size, is 2.5 inches wide by 3.45 inches tall. A bridge size playing card, also known as narrow size, is 2.25 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall. Other than the size difference, both decks are the same. In fact, most poker rooms across the United States deal a bridge size playing card in their poker rooms in order to accommodate the (usually) smaller hand of a female dealer. Both are perfectly acceptable for any game that uses a standard deck of playing cards.

So you’re now decided on plastic cards and the size, your next decision involves the faces/index of the set you want to purchase.

copag_sizes

The image to the left shows the three different index styles: standard on top, jumbo in the center and magnum jumbo on the bottom. The index refers to the size of the pip on the face of a playing card. A pip is the number or letter and the corresponding suit that is displayed in the upper left and bottom right hand corners of a playing card. A Jumbo Index has a larger pip. The number or letter is about ½ inch tall. A regular index is smaller and the number or letter is about ¼ tall. A magnum index can basically be seen from across the street! This larger size not only works well for those with poor eyesight, but is very easy to see from all angles of the table in a ten-player game.

Your last decision is the colors &/or backs of the cards. You have lots of choices here but realize that your game’s focus will be on the faces of the cards and not necessarily on their backs.

CLICK HERE to see the selection of Copag cards we have online or even better stop in our store where you can see our complete line (which will all eventually be online).

A Vegas Legend… the Dunes Hotel!

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

dunessign

The Dunes Hotel is one of the most collectible casinos ever located on the Las Vegas strip. The present day Bellagio Hotel now resides on the old site of the Dunes on the Southwest corner of Flamingo Blvd and Las Vegas Blvd.

The Dunes has a great and storied history. It opened on May 23rd, 1955 with 200 rooms. The total cost to build it was only $3.5 million, a tremendous amount in those days. In 1957 the “Minsky’s Follies” show opened in the Dunes theater and was the city’s first topless review.

dunes_old1

In 1961 the 24-story high rise “Diamond of the Dunes” more than doubled the hotel’s room count from 200 to 450. For a while this was the tallest building in Nevada even though it only had 21 floors (there was no 11th, 12th or 13th floors). In 1964 the giant sultan was moved around back to the golf course and a 180 foot sign was erected at a cost of $250,000. Containing several miles of neon tubing and with an operating cost of over $100/day this sign was phenomenal and became a Las Vegas must-see.

A second tower was built in 1979 bringing the total room count to 1,300. This tower contained the most luxurious suites in the city. In 1985 the giant sultan was destroyed by fire. In ‘87 Japanese millionaire Masao Nangaku purchased the Dunes for $155 million but it just couldn’t compete with the new mega-resorts that were starting to be built around it. Steve Wynn bought the Dunes in 1992 for $75 million and had it imploded in October of ‘93 to make room for his new Bellagio.

So here’s your chance to get a piece of this historical Las Vegas hotel as we have some chips up on eBay ending Sunday evening. Just click the chips below to go to the actual auction.
