Auction Time… Going Once, Going Twice, SOLD!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

logoebay

This week we have some interesting chips ending Sunday night. Just like every other week, our eBay auctions begin to end at 5 PM Pacific time with each auction ending three minutes apart.

1group3

Just like the past two weeks we have our THIRD group of twenty-five $1 chips from all over Nevada ending. I just can’t stress enough what a great deal and value this is to the beginning collector. Not only are you saved the incredible amount of “leg work” from going around the state to 25 casinos but over time you are most certainly guaranteed that they will escalate in value.

We also have a few other great looking and very collectible chips ending on Sunday. Just click the actual chip below to go right to that particular auction.

We’ve got old obsolete chips from the Castaways, Circus-Circus, Continental and the Desert Inn amongst others all up for auction. Be sure to place your best bid and good luck!

25 $1 Casino Chips for One Winning Bid!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

logoebay

Last week, this week and for the next two weeks we have had and will have an interesting eBay auction. We put together 100 $1 chips and grouped them into four piles of 25 each. Some of the chips are current, some are obsolete. Some from Northern Nevada, some from the Southern part of the state. There are some house chips and some limited editions. They are a great starter set for the new collector, a great gift for a would be collector or a fantastic way to fill in a few holes of your own collection and still have a few traders left over.

Last week’s group ended up selling for LESS than their face value of $25.00 and as I write these words this week’s group is still WAY less than face value as well.

Here’s the group that ends at 5 PM Pacific time this Sunday:

1group2

Just imagine how much time and gasoline it would take to drive all over the state picking these up for yourself? It would be SO much easier to just click the image above (or click here) place the winning bid and get them all mailed directly to your doorstep. And if you get lucky like last week’s winner you might just get them at less than the face value of the combined group! Don’t believe me? Here’s a link to last week’s finished auction of 25 different $1 chips that ended for under $22.00: Click Here!

Remember the current lot is the 2nd in a series of four that will run for the next few weeks, so there’s lots of opportunities to get one of these great 25-chip sets.

At any time it’s always easy to check our current eBay lots by entering this URL into your browser window: www.tinyurl.com/spinettis and you will be automatically redirected to our current auctions.

“Illegal” Auctions?

Friday, July 17th, 2009

logoebay

Did that blog title startle you?

Of course here at Spinettis we would NEVER do anything illegal but we do have some “illegal” chips up for auction this week. I guess I better clarify that as well… the chips themselves are not illegal but rather the casinos that they came from were.

Back in the 30’s through the 60’s there were many illegal casinos in just about every state of the union. At that time gaming was only legal in Nevada however places like Hot Springs Arkansas, Newport Kentucky, New Orleans Louisiana and Steubenville Ohio (among other towns) had many clubs, card rooms and casinos. In many cases organized crime ran these and bribed the town’s sheriff and law enforcement to turn a blind eye towards them.

Sometimes it was a single poker game in a back room, but in other cases there were multiple gaming tables, slot machines, horse books and even restaurants, showrooms & lounges.

vapors

For instance there was the Vapors in Hot Springs Arkansas. This property was built in 1959 by a local prominent businessman. Although it was a small nightclub, big name entertainers like Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore, Phyllis Diller, Liberace, Tiny Tim, the Smothers Brothers and more frequently performed there.

The Vapors may have been a talent entertainment facility, but income from the casino in the club and sales from alcohol helped pad the bill for big name talent. Although casino gambling in Hot Springs was illegal, the owner of the Vapors brought respectability by joining the chamber of commerce, contributing to all church fund drives and even gave the city two swimming pools – one for the whites and one for the blacks. He was quoted as saying, “Never underestimate the effectiveness of a straight cash bribe.”

Here are some chips from the Vapors. You can actually click on any of the chips below to go right to the eBay auction.

There were also hundreds of other illegal clubs such as the 633 Club, the Belvedere Club, the Bridge Street Club, the Idle Hour Club in Texas, O’dwyer’s, the Southern Club, the Tower Club, White Front and the Yorkshire Club. Right now on eBay we have chips up for each of these illegal joints. You can see them all by just CLICKING HERE. These 76 illegal chip auctions end on Sunday evening the 19th starting at 5 PM Pacific time though. So be sure to take a look and place your best bid before then.

A Great Chip at an even better price!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Often people ask us what is the best poker chip to buy. Our answer is quick and easy… we tell them that if they want the best, they want a casino quality chip like a Paulson or a Chipco. But when they find out that a PaulSon runs from 99¢/each to $1.37/each and a Chipco runs from 70¢/each to $1.00/each, they wonder if there might be something a little less expensive. But they still want a decent chip that is perhaps a little more affordable.

At that point we’re quick to point out the Dunes commemorative chips. You can pick them up on our website for an incredibly low 30¢/each. These chips use the very similar golf course art that were used on the Dunes chips when the hotel was closed in 1993.

dunes_blog

On the left is the commemorative chip and on the right is the exact same real chip that was used in the casino at the time of its closing. There are a few differences, the word “commemorative” is above the hotel name and you will notice that on the commemorative chip it has the opening and closing dates of the hotel that are not found on the authentic one.

dunes-chip-2

Besides the artwork both chips are similar in weight, both weighing 9.5 grams. They both have a fairly similar Dunes house mold and they both have the same combination of insert colors and edge spots. Each chip has four sets of three inserts.

The chips have the identical inlay shape as the originals and both are made out of a clay composite material.

The commemorative chip is actually 40mm which is 1mm larger than the 39mm authentic ones. But they really do look, sound and feel fairly similar.

The commemorative chips come in ten colors/denominations:
Pink 25¢
Gray 50¢
Blue $1
Red $5
Green $25
Black $100
White $500
Yellow $1000
Brown $5000
Orange $25000

Order them in multiples of 25 and at $30.00 for 100 chips you won’t find a better deal in terms of value vs. quality out there.

Click Here to order your very own set of Dunes commemorative chips.

And if by chance you are interested in the REAL authentic Dunes chips that were actually on the table games of the casino in the 80’s & 90’s then follow this link by clicking here.
